Pet Brands Revamp Strategies to Appeal to Nutrition-Focused Consumers

Pet brands are redefining their identities and packaging, shifting towards transparency and simplicity to attract health-conscious pet owners.

Recent shifts in the pet food industry show brands are taking significant steps to refresh their identities and packaging to align better with the needs of nutrition-conscious pet owners. Notably, companies like Versele-Laga, now known simply as Versele, and Aussie brand PetLab, recently renamed PawLab, illustrate this trend towards modernization. Other brands touting similar revitalizations include Czech brand Carnilove, U.S.-based My Perfect Pet, Ark Naturals, and Brazil’s Natoo.

Standing Out in a Crowded Market

The impetus behind these identity updates is twofold: effective branding in a competitive marketplace and appealing to a consumer base that values transparency and quality. Gert Cooreman, founder of GC Consulting, supports this view, stating, “Many brands are focusing more on refreshing their identity, packaging and communication to remain modern and relevant in an increasingly competitive market.” This shift aims to differentiate products on both retail shelves and e-commerce platforms.

Simplified Packaging and Clearer Labels

One of the most prominent trends is a movement towards minimalist, neutral packaging design paired with straightforward label communication. For instance, Carnilove, a premium pet food brand under VAFO Praha, overhauled its identity and product portfolio to enhance consistency and clarity. According to Karolína Šifaldová, a Junior Brand Manager at Carnilove, the redesign aims to unify their market presence globally with straightforward and confident branding that aligns with their commitment to providing natural pet food.

The packaging update affects over 100 SKUs, spotlighting primary ingredients, protein sources, and specific nutritional advantages in a clear manner. Šifaldová emphasizes the importance of packaging in fostering consumer trust, stating, “When you are buying super premium food, the packaging is the first thing that builds trust.” The design now features simple illustrations that convey vital benefits directly on the front, making it easily digestible for consumers.

Establishing Consumer Confidence

This focus on packaging is geared towards building a stronger bond between the brand and its consumers. Yuichi Ota from YCP Group notes that as the industry evolves, brands are moving away from viewing their products solely as commodities. He adds, “Identity refreshes are often attempts to close that emotional gap” to appeal to caring pet owners rather than just price-sensitive buyers. Different geographic markets present varying expectations; for instance, consumers in Asia prioritize food safety while those in developed markets expect ecological credentials as standard.

Natoo Pet Foods has also embraced this ethos with a new packaging launch in June, placing its sustainability commitment and Brazilian heritage front and center in its messaging targeted at U.S. audiences.

Science-Based Differences

My Perfect Pet has similarly rolled out a redesign focusing on transparency of ingredients within its gently cooked pet meals. According to Katie Lilly, CMO of My Perfect Pet, this is a critical aspect of branding as the category of fresh pet food expands. The new packaging clearly lists key ingredients such as fresh vegetables and high-quality proteins, which the company believes are vital for consumer awareness and decision-making in stores.

The package redesign also introduces dual display orientations meant to enhance visibility on store shelves. Lilly notes an alignment with the Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO) standards in terms of label clarity and accuracy, further solidifying their commitment to trustworthy communication.

Ark Naturals, focusing on pet oral health solutions, has modernized its packaging to highlight the science behind its ingredients, citing relevant clinical research to back its claims.

Beyond Aesthetics

These branding updates are about more than just visual appeal; they’re also about reformulating and repositioning products themselves. For instance, Carnilove is broadening its cat food range to attract the growing demographic of cat owners seeking premium options. Moreover, My Perfect Pet has introduced precisely portioned eight-ounce bars to guide pet owners in serving sizes. Both brands eliminated allergy-inducing ingredients from their recipes: Carnilove has gone entirely chicken-free, while My Perfect Pet avoids dried legumes and grains.

The UK-based Purr & Meow brand, part of Pooch & Mutt, has refreshed its formulations, emphasizing gut health to meet evolving consumer priorities, now integrating functional ingredients like prebiotics and psyllium husk. Meanwhile, Ark Naturals is taking a direct-to-consumer approach with an educational platform aimed at helping consumers understand their product offerings better.

Creating a Cohesive Brand

Versele’s rebranding underscores a broader trend of companies aiming for a cohesive consumer experience. By simplifying its name and structure, Versele intends to foster a master brand that supports growth across its product categories. According to their Corporate Brand Manager, Sarah Lanckman, this consolidation aids in increasing visibility and fostering deeper relationships with consumers, which is crucial for market expansion.

While brand recognition is vital, Lanckman points out that elevating consumer awareness is a primary driver behind the change. The company has retained key elements of the previous name to maintain recognition while ensuring that each category brand remains distinct yet identifiable.

Tackling Trademark Challenges

For PetLab, the transition to PawLab was primarily administrative, highlighting the complexities of trademark efforts. Founder Tyron Lazar-Tromp remarked on the long struggle to secure the brand’s identity in Australia, making the new name a welcome relief that allows for expansion into new product categories like grooming and supplements.

Cooreman suggests that simplifying to a master brand can also streamline marketing and operational costs, fostering stronger connections with customers. This clarity is particularly advantageous in e-commerce settings, which reward straightforward brand narratives.

This wave of rebranding reflects enduring trends in the pet industry focused on health, transparency, and consumer engagement, signaling that such changes will likely remain integral to market evolution.
